What Items to Put in Storage when you are Downsizing for Retirement

Retirement often means relocating to a smaller home where you can’t possibly fit in all of the things that you’ve accumulated over the years. Downsizing is a practical way to save money on your relocation and also enjoy your space during your retirement years.

As you start to pack, you’ll find that some of your possessions need to be thrown away while others may be sold at garage sales. You may also choose to put some items into storage for future use when downsizing for retirement. But what items should you store when you are downsizing to a smaller home? Here are McWilliams Moving & Storage’s suggestions for items to keep in storage:

  • Art – When downsizing for retirement it is better to put any form of valuable art that you own in a storage facility. Whether it involves paintings, sculptures or any other form of art, you should make sure that every piece is properly stored. Your space may be too small to display them or you may worry about keeping them safe. Whatever the reason, choose proper storage so you do not destroys your favourite masterpieces.
  • Valuable Furniture – Authentic furniture or antique furniture is often heavy and takes up a lot of room. Your new retirement home may not be the best place to keep it. Putting valuable furniture in storage before you decide what to do with it is a great idea. You should not be paying the moving company for transporting something that you don’t need in your new home. Instead, keep it in storage and save it for future generations to enjoy.
  • Books – Over the course of a lifetime, people gather lots of books especially if they are passionate about reading. Taking them all with you will be heavy and can take up a lot of your space. It is a good idea to keep your books in storage; just make sure that you keep them well protected from being deteriorated by mildew or other damaging factors.

Downsizing for retirement may be a challenge. You may need to give up some of your belongings. However, that doesn’t happen when you put them in storage. Eliminate the things that you can donate or sell, and put in storage just those items that really matter and mean a lot to you.
